Or you can set it in /etc/make.conf (assuming the variables are unlikely
to clash with anything else), or if you've seen the light and use
pkgtools (sysutils/portupgrade), edit $PREFIX/etc/pkgtools.conf, which
lets you specify make args using glob patterns.

Makefile.local or so would be a nice clean solution too.
