Login is as someone with shutdown rights,and issue the
command shutdown now.  This will get you a question asking
you which shell to use when it hits single user mode.  Enter
/bin/sh and then you can go to etc and edit your passwd
file.

I wouldn't autoselect bash as root's shell.  Why?  If you
ever have a problem with you HD, /usr may not be mounted and
you won't get a shell.  I generally leave root with csh and
then switch to bash when necessary, temporarily.  A little
more typing, but...
