My friend has a Sound Blaster 16 PCI. When detected by pcm (either as kernel module or built in the kernel): Sep 11 22:11:01 dude /kernel: pcm0: <Creative CT5880-C> port 0xd800-0xd83f irq 11 at device 9.0 on pci0 Sep 11 22:11:01 dude /kernel: pcm0: ac97 codec reports dac not ready This is under FreeBSD 4.5-RELEASE (i386). /dev/sndstat says: FreeBSD Audio Driver (newpcm) Sep 11 2002 15:43:50 Installed devices: pcm0: <Creative CT5880-C> at io 0xd800 irq 11 (1p/1r/0v channels duplex) And mixer reports: Mixer rec is currently set to 0:0 (And I am able to change it. And it appears to be able to record.) There is no mixer control for any output. And xmix, xmixer, and xxmix(?) also don't have any volume settings (and only record level can be changed). Outputing anything to /dev/audio (or /dev/dsp) does nothing, because, I guess, volume is zero. If I understand correctly, the AC97 is for analog/digital conversions and works as the mixer. Anyways, has anyone seen a mixer that doesn't have a volume control? Any work-arounds? My friend is slowly updating to 4.6.2 via dialup modem and hopefully that may improve the situation. (On a unrelated note, what happened to /pub/FreeBSD/ports/i386/packages-4.5-release directory? I am guessing it should be a symlink to packages-4-stable, but it is missing.) Jeremy C.
