I just dropped to single-user (shutdown now) and simply unmounted the slices
except for root.  I then ran tunefs on each of the unmounted slices.  I left
the root slice as sync.  I figured it was safer, and it wasn't that
important to me to have that particular slice on softupdates anyway.

Yes you can ... umount /usr ... umount /var ... etc
