Yes, I've succeeded ... but using absolute path names instead of relative
path names (if I remember correctly).

Here's the script I use:

tar --exclude-from exclude.files -cvzf <destination> /home/alex/*

and my "exclude.files" looks like this:

/home/alex/ardoise/*
/home/alex/ports/*
/home/alex/.netscape/*
/home/alex/tmp/*
/home/alex/download/*
