what type of cards isa pci ???
If isa you can set the i/o and irq then
when you boot at the prompt type -c
boot: type -c
visual config and you'll see ed0 etc to configure ed1.

Also to configure a new kernel you may want to check
out /usr/src/sys/i386/conf say for example.
There is a lint file that explains some.
