/etc/make.conf is your local settings that override
/etc/defaults/make.conf.  You should never edit /etc/defaults/*;
just copy the lines you want to change into /etc/* and then edit
those.

That way if you update your system, your local changes don't get
wiped out and it's easier to manage.
