Nowadays, there's only one truth: any hard disk is going to fail under load pretty soon. Apart from that, keeping disks cooler helps. Using disks from different manufacturers in redundant arrays helps. Keeping an eye on smart data helps. Seagate, Maxtor, WD, Samsung, Hitachi/IBM - all have their pros and cons. Each manufacturer has its place both in a desktop PC and in a high-end cluster.
