Is your locale set correctly for UK English?

curlew:/home/mike% env | grep LANG=20
LANG=3Den_GB.UTF-8=20

The default section of /etc/login.conf starts like this:

default:\
	:charset=3DUTF-8:\
	:lang=3Den_GB.UTF-8:\

=2D-=20
