It's that damn runnit script which is trying to be too smart about things---and getting them wrong. The only way I could get the demo to work was to unset my CLASSPATH and set JAVA_HOME to /usr/local/jdk1.1.5 (which is where I untarred the FreeBSD JDK) and let the runnit script figure everything out.
