You, um... _are_ running mountd as root, yes? :-)

If so, then all I can think of is that /usr/blah is not yet mounted
locally (check the ouput of the mount command) or it's a weird
filesystem. Let's see that mount output. :-)

If anyone else has more of a clue on this than me, feel free to jump in
any time. ;-)
