I did install MATE at one point, along with GDM:

1.  The mouse pointer starting at GDM was a wristwatch (?), and stayed 
that way into MATE.

2.  MATE had very few applications/ applets.  For example, I couldn't 
find a file manager.


How well supported/ current/ complete are the other desktop environments 
on FreeBSD -- lxde, xfce, whatever?
