I've had FreeBSD running quite happily in a 250MB partition.

FreeBSD uses UFS . It don't use ext2 - although it will mount ext2
partitions. As for Partition Magic, well from memory it don't do UFS.

I've installed several unixes. FreeBSD was my first unix and it was real
easy. Setting up the disks can be a bit of a chore - but only if you
insist on doing it by hand.

A few weeks back I acquired a copy RedHat Linux. This was quite easy to
install but I found myself saying "FreeBSD is easier" when I was setting up
the disks. If I remember it seemed to have the irritating habit of using
multiple entries in the partition table. Not the worst unix setup but

Your best bet is to just have a go. Plan to install it twice. The first
time to see what it's like - and to find the pitfalls. The second time to
do it right. It's amazing what you can learn by just "having a go".

Once installed, if you still need to know what the disks are called check
out the file

	/etc/fstab

which lists all your filesystems.
