Yours, I do not think that the PR should be closed. The bug is real, there is no fix available at the time, and it could take quite substantial time before it is (or is not) fixed upstream. Maybe option (2) in the original PR would be better as the workaround in the meantime. I'll be happy to provide a patch for it, if you do not have time yourself.
