Cleaning the build directory won't help us here. > Current > webupdate script will not clean up the destination directory. This is > because reducing 404 errors. If we use clean destination, we will got > many 404s when everytime ID changed. The alternative to 404s is serve up obsolete content, which is what we're doing now. Various Web caches and search engines (including the FreeBSD search facility on our own Web server) keep references to the old, obsolete pages. We need to get *rid* of the old pages so that we don't give stale content to users. We've gotten a number of complaints on doc@ about this. > I think I should remove obsoleted pages after some period... Some time ago, somebody (roam?) committed a patch that gives all of the pages for the Handbook and FAQ meaningful filenames, so we don't have the randomly-generated filenames anymore. Therefore, the cleaning out of the Handbook and FAQ directories should be a one-time operation, barring a restructuring of either document. (There are some other documents, such as the porters-handbook, where this is still a problem.)
