Why did you find this necessary?  Did you have
problems without it?

The DTC compiler isn't installed by default on 9.1.
It is installed by default on sufficiently recent -CURRENT.

To install it:

  $ cd /usr/src/usr.bin/dtc
  $ sudo make && sudo make install

I should add a check for that.
