You could try the following change:

sysctl vfs.ufs.dirhash_maxmem=3D8388608

Did you use the GENERIC-kernel? If so, remember that witness,
invariants etc. are a part of the RELENG_6-branch. You should disable
these settings with a custom-build kernel. You may also want to read
/usr/src/UPDATING.
