Unfortunately, no change, but I'm going to start combing device.hints for any devices my laptop doesn't have, and turn them all off, maybe I'll get lucky. Looks like I can install amd64 on it, but I don't think the currently-running i386 6.1 release is the problem, you'd think if the processor type was the issue it wouldn't run at all.
