Be forewarned: Newbie response!

you need to man ifconfig - also try to login as root and load
/stand/sysinstall -i think
and scroll down to where it says post install configuration then go to
network installation

also I've found the /var/log/messages file - which tells you what
happens upon boot to be helpful when trying to figure out what
parameters your system thinks your nic should be running with.
