reboot
at boot prompt type boot -s<enter>
will boot in single user mode
at prompt type "mount -a"
then if / is mounted read only, perhaps
mount -u -rw /
passwd root
<type in new password>
CTL-D

Alternately, you can boot from a cd mount and chroot to your os /
passwd root
etc...
