Last summer I wrote up the procedure in my cheat sheets (http://www.mostgraveconcern.com/freebsd/sheet.cgi?3-4upgrade). Although it's now quite old, it should still work. At least take a look at it, since it points you to the official documentation. My best piece of advice: After you cvsup the new sources, make sure you read /usr/src/UPDATING carefully. (Then, of course, back up everything you want to keep...) Although the transition from 3 to 4 is definitely more convoluted than an update within the 3 branch, it's actually not that bad. And 4-STABLE is worlds better; you won't look back.
