Have you set the locale variables (LANG, LC_*) ?

E.g. I have
LANG=3Dda_DK.ISO_8859-1
LC_MESSAGES=3Den_US.ISO_8859-1

So you probably need to set those variables to something along like
that.

(LC_MESSAGES is set to stop programs from trying to speak Danish.)
