Edson Brandi reported on -docs@ a few weeks ago while updating the pt_BR translations that does not display quotes with the default-installed version of tidy installed with textproc/docproj. Unfortunately, I have not had the cycles to track down what the problem is, but this is apparently fixed in the tidy-devel port, which is not installed as part of textproc/docproj. But, it is not as simple as updating the default RUN_DEPENDS in the port, as there may be other bugs that creep in. I hope to have the cycles to do a full-scale test between build output between both tidy versions soon (I am hoping in the next few days or so), but at the moment I have other factors preventing me from upgrading the ports on my laptop, so I may need to set up a new build environment for it. I tried to rewrite to use the system drive and a new one based on your patch and a material which I used for an in-house training: http://people.allbsd.org/~hrs/FreeBSD/geom-mirror.html http://people.allbsd.org/~hrs/FreeBSD/geom-chapter.20120604-1.diff I think the most difficult part of this procedure is copying the partition table, but is this version still difficult for the average user? I intentionally removed labeling and alignment handling because I feel they are rather complex when explaining how to convert a single-disk system to one with a mirrored disk containing the exactly same layout and data, though I fully agree that they are also useful and important. At least, labels of "alpha" and "beta" would be inefficient because "gmirror status" does not show the labels as the provider names, and gmirror member disks are recognized even if /dev/ada0 is moved to /dev/ada6, for example. -- Hiroki ----Security_Multipart(Mon_Jun__4_18_23_31_2012_181)-- Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.11 (FreeBSD) iEYEABECAAYFAk/MfpMACgkQTyzT2CeTzy1b4ACeLS4SVU0ZH641TWDUgeI+0+ik N2AAn0sWHd9Alcal5QvtgRlfn/eJL1D+ =8VMb -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- ----Security_Multipart(Mon_Jun__4_18_23_31_2012_181)---- From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jun 4 11:06:12 2012 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F07611065675 for ; Mon, 4 Jun 2012 11:06:12 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D9A3C8FC12 for ; Mon, 4 Jun 2012 11:06:12 +0000 (UTC) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.5/8.14.5) with ESMTP id q54B6CW6016529 for ; Mon, 4 Jun 2012 11:06:12 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.5/8.14.5/Submit) id q54B6BIl016526 for freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org; Mon, 4 Jun 2012 11:06:11 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Date: Mon, 4 Jun 2012 11:06:11 GMT Message-Id: <201206041106.q54B6BIl016526@freefall.freebsd.org> X-Authentication-Warning: freefall.freebsd.org: gnats set sender to owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org using -f From: FreeBSD bugmaster To: FreeBSD doc list Cc: Subject: Current unassigned doc problem reports X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 04 Jun 2012 11:06:13 -0000 (Note: an HTML version of this report is available at http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr-summary.cgi?category=doc .) The problem I had was when the new drive was larger than the old drive. gmirror creates a mirror on the new, larger drive using the full space available (1T). The old drive (250G, say) can't be inserted in this mirror because it's not large enough. I banged my head against this several ways without success. The only way to really do it currently is to make a 250G partition on the new drive and create the mirror in that. It would work with GPT, except then there is the problem of boot partitions, and whether to mirror those, and possibly converting from the layout on the old drive. Given the rate of change in drives and the age of many solidly-running FreeBSD systems, it seems to me that a lot of users will face the problem of finding a new drive that is no larger than the old. I may be alone in that, though. One solution would be an option to gmirror(8) to arbitrarily limit the size of the mirror created. 'gmirror label -v -c 250g gm0 /dev/ada1', for example (-c for capacity). Should be an easy mod, gmirror already takes the min for capacity when the mirror is created with multiple drives. A new capacity parameter would just be another number in that list. But, at present, there is no such option in gmirror. So this procedure would require a big warning: "The new drive must be no larger than the old one, not even one block." And that would need to be explained. > I think the most difficult part of this procedure is copying the > partition table, but is this version still difficult for the average > user? > > I intentionally removed labeling and alignment handling because I > feel they are rather complex when explaining how to convert a > single-disk system to one with a mirrored disk containing the exactly > same layout and data, though I fully agree that they are also useful > and important. Interesting! I did not know gmirror was relocatable, although it seems a little obvious now. Yes, that makes the labels unnecessary. (Side note: on 9.x, at least the way I've been creating them, gmirror status does show drive labels!) Alignment, well I can see where it might be considered beyond the scope of this particular article. If it came to that, removing the explanation but leaving the -a4k options would be a way to simplify it yet still not let the user down. One other note: "mymirror0" was used as the mirror name to suggest that it was a user-created name rather than something the system created. It's a little tricky. What do you think about having two sections, one for how to create a standard mirror from scratch, and one for converting a single-disk system to a mirror? > Maybe gmirror should support a capacity option as you pointed out... If you look at it funny, sysinstall will happily write the /etc/fstab for the new disk over your existing one. You didn't need that old version, did you? 19.3.2 has a procedure for setting up a disk using fdisk and bsdlabel, which seems overly complicated, mounting the new disk at "/1". At this point, use of fdisk and bsdlabel can probably be replaced with gpart(8) instead. At the same time, the instructions for "dedicated" disks can be eliminated. It has no advantage and several possible disadvantages. Following that is a section on ccd(4), which needs a look. I was under the impression that ccd was, um, only historically relevant now. Finally, there's a section on ataraid(4), which should at least mention and link to the new graid(4) section in the GEOM chapter. 19.10 "Backups to Floppies" can probably go. It wasn't very viable even when floppies could still be bought. One of the reasons why people stop using FreeBSD is the ports tree respective how things have to be handled. In my opinion, a small change in the handbook will make it much easier for beginners to use the ports tree in case they run into emergencies. This section: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/cvsup.html states currently: 'Which version(s) of them do you want? With CVSup, you can receive virtually any version of the sources that ever existed. That is possible because the cvsupd server works directly from the CVS repository, which contains all of the versions. You specify which one of them you want using the tag= and date= value fields. Warning: Be very careful to specify any tag= fields correctly. Some tags are valid only for certain collections of files. If you specify an incorrect or misspelled tag, CVSup will delete files which you probably do not want deleted. In particular, use only tag=. for the ports-* collections.' According to the discussion, the ports tree is tagged. I would suggest to mention this fact here together with the risks which are involved. Why? Beginners fight with the system on many corners. One of the main corners is the ports tree. Going back to an older version which is known to work will help in many of these cases. Going back will help them to get a working system again from which they can continue. The tags for the ports tree are already mentioned in the kernel section. A link to this section will help the beginner. There is a simple reason why I got this idea. I myself use this trick since many years when my ports tree gives me problems. I go back to the ports tree of the last release which does not have to be the ports tree of the installed FreeBSD. I then use packages and/or ports to come to that stage and restart upgrading afterwards. What do you think about this change in the documentation? I have seen traffic on freebsd.org mailing lists within the past year from people using "dangerously dedicated" disks on recent-ish systems. Which is not to say that we need to mention it in the introductory paragraphs -- I do think that we should keep mention of it 19.3.2.2 and mention that it is not recommended, though. > > 19.3.1 suggests using sysinstall to slice and partition disks, a bad idea now > at least. I don't remember all the logic), I think it's okay to switch our documentation to it. I think there are some purists who still want to use dedicated disks, and we can probably keep the one line about how to label a device directly with warning that your pointy hat should be sufficiently tall. > Following that is a section on ccd(4), which needs a look. I was under the > impression that ccd was, um, only historically relevant now. > Indeed. ccd.4 and ccdconfig.4 both have .Dd in ... 1995. In contrast to dedicated disks, I have not seen any ccd-releated traffic in recent memory. Actually looking, Jeremy Chadwick gave it as an option in "File system trouble with ICH9 controller" on 6/10/10 (alongside ZFS, no less!) More interesting is the 2009 thread "Request for opinions - gvinum or ccd?", which veered away with essentially "no, please use something else" (gstripe or ZFS). The only thing I would want to check before applying the danish axe is that ccdconfig.8 mentions a mode for compatibility with Linux md(4) ... I would like to think that there are other ways to do this, but do not know offhand. > Finally, there's a section on ataraid(4), which should at least mention and > link to the new graid(4) section in the GEOM chapter. > I think ataraid is really in a deprecated status. The future is in ada(4) disks and not ad(4) disks, which means that ataraid(4) may not be used and graid(4) is necessary. We should probably keep the ataraid(4) documentation for now but put a tag at the top that it is not current, per your suggestion. > 19.10 "Backups to Floppies" can probably go. There was a warning from the gptboot about corrupted backup GPT header. But now the behavior has changed with r234692 and later it has been merged to stable. So, when you are doing all in the right way - it should work. But: 1. When geom_mirror module is not loaded GEOM_PART will complain that the backup GPT header is not in the last LBA and partition table will be marked as CORRUPT. The recover operation will destroy the GEOM_MIRROR's metadata. 2. If primary GPT header or table become damaged, then gptboot will not detect GPT because the backup GPT header is not in the last LBA. So, the system will not boot. -- WBR, Andrey V. IIRC it was a metadata > corruption but I do not remember when it happens. When gmirror is used to mirror two disks, metadata goes in the last block of each. If GPT partitioning is used on the mirror, the GPT secondary partition table overwrites the mirror metadata because, by specification, GPT puts that secondary table at the end of the physical drive, rather than inside the gmirror logical device. There's no good solution. If the secondary GPT table was put inside the gmirror device, it would no longer be standards-compliant. If the mirror is created after the disk GPT partitions are created, it overwrites the secondary GPT table. The mirror will work, but the backup GPT is corrupted and /boot/gptboot shows a warning about it on each boot. The alternative is to create a mirror for each GPT partition. mirror metadata goes inside each GPT partition without problem. However, multiple mirrors are running, at least three for a minimal GPT layout of one each of freebsd-boot, freebsd-ufs, and freebsd-swap partitions, and six or more for a split-filesystem layout. If more than one of those mirrors starts to resync at the same time, it will (may?) thrash the drive. The gmirror resync code could have a lock to prevent more than one resync at a time. At present, I don't know if it does, but doubt it. If gmirror could keep and locate metadata in a special GPT partition, whole-disk GPT mirrors would be possible. That might even be GEOM-compatible, with the label code detecting that partition and pointing the mirror code to it. Yes, i also have thought about this and this should work for most GEOM cl= asses, but i revised again PMBR code and it seems that it will not work anyway := ) Our PMBR doesn't use backup GPT header and table, and it doesn't verify correctness of primary GPT. =46rom the other side, there are three situations when we use GPT: 1. FreeBSD is only one system on the disk and we use PMBR and gptboot to = boot it. In case if we will fix PMBR your patch will help. 2. FreeBSD is no one on the disk, but we still use legacy boot method (PM= BR+gptboot). I don't know what behavior have other systems when they detect invalid GP= T (i.e. when backup header is not in the last LBA). 3. We use UEFI (it is not work yet). Also i don't know what UEFI firmware will do with invalid GPT. --=20 WBR, Andrey V. Some of the attention recently has been focused on stale URLs. I'l like to pop up one level and suggest that there are certain areas of the website that have altogether outlived their usefulness, regardless of the state of the URLs they contain. My ill-thought-out suggestion would be to somehow create a "historical interest" section (subdirectory?) and to populate it with the following. I'm, of couse, willing to entertain any suggestions, but these are the ones that in the past have made me go "ew." almost certainly need to move: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/5-roadmap/ http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/checkpoint/ http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/dialup-firewall/ http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/diskless-x/ http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/euro/ http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/formatting-media/ (nb: anything referencing "dedicated mode" *must immediately die*) http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/storage-devices/ (nb: contains "what is SCSI". yeah baby.) http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/version-guide/ (nb: abandoned for years. mea culpa. *must* be deleted. a followon on the wiki would be welcomed.) http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/vinum/ http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/zip-drive/ (nb: ohforf) http://www.freebsd.org/kse/ http://www.freebsd.org/smp/ (as previously noted on IRC. but don't fix it, kill it. too stale to live.) http://www.freebsd.org/y2kbug.html (I shouldn't have to say this) for possible consideration: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/casestudy-argentina.com/ http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/fonts/ http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/hats/ http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/ipsec-must/ http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/linux-comparison/ http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/multi-os/ http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/relaydelay/ http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/vm-design/ http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/design-44bsd/ http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/dev-model/ http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/pmake/ Some pages that reference the above bitrot (I'm sure there are others): http://www.freebsd.org/projects/newbies.html http://www.freebsd.org/projects/ (KAME? wtf??) http://www.freebsd.org/where.html (pretty sure "floppy disk" and "magnetic tape" are ready for /dev/null) I'm willing to entertain suggestions/criticism/etc. mcl From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Jun 8 10:43:25 2012 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EE3DA106564A; This is the relevant man page from 8.3 - the version of FreeBSD you reported to be using - and the -d option is documented: -d Cause find to perform a depth-first traversal, i.e., directories are visited in post-order and all entries in a directory will be acted on before the directory itself. By default, find visits directories in pre-order, i.e., before their contents. Note, the default is not a breadth-first traversal. This option is equivalent to the -depth primary of IEEE Std 1003.1-2001 (``POSIX.1''). The -d option can be useful when find is used with cpio(1) to process files that are contained in directories with unusual permissions. It ensures that you have write permission while you are placing files in a directory, then sets the directory's permissions as the last thing. If you feel this could be clarified in some way, please let me know. Thanks, Isabell. In the first location, a full and complete description of the function of the -d option is in fact given. However in the second location, virtually nothing is said about the functionality of -d, and there isn't even a reference telling the reader to look for documentation of the -d option higher up within the man page. I've been sending in some PRs to clear out some old 404s and obsolete stuff on our website. It naturally occurred to me that we should do something a little bit better than the default Apache 404 At a minimum the banner from the home page can be put up with a short "email docs@FreeBSD.org and report this error" I've been running linkchecker on the website for a few days now, we've been able to whittle down the 404s a bit. (Thanks Isabell! gjb and others) http://www.db.net/~db/log_404_uniq_20120609.txt Secondly Robert Watson has suggested we should be using http://www.freebsdfoundation.org/testimonials.shtml and presenting a different one each time. This could be easily done using a simple safe shell script cgi. We could get deb@ to give us a nice longer full page testimonial to feature. I think someone might be already working on getting these full page testimonials? - Diane -- - db@FreeBSD.org db@db.net http://www.db.net/~db Why leave money to our children if we don't leave them the Earth?
