I am new to the freebsd lists and I was not sure where I should send this.... I would like to install some version of unix FreeBSD on my machine at home. I want to use a boot manager so that I can have unix but my wife can still have Windows 3.1. My question is do I have supported hardware. I have a 90 MHz pentium (Micron P90), PCI bus, Micronix MotherBoard I believe, Western Digital EIDE 730 MB hard disk, Future Domain SCSI card for CD-ROM which is a Plextor 4x, Mag Innovision 17" monitor 17DF I think, Matrox Impression Plus (2 MB VRAM), HP 4Plus Printer. Can I use FreeBSD as I desire? Just got the 2.0.5. from W.C. I can not seem to find README or an FAQ for an ``update''operation.. I've lived from the 1.0 to 1.1, then 2.0, each with a scratch reinstall. I was really hoping for 2.0.5 we would not have to do a full install just to update. Did anyone develop an update proceedure? A scratch install each time is a bit tough. Thanks in advance. A fan.... I wish that I could tell you there was an update proceedure, but work on that has just been slow, slow slow.. :-( Jordan P.S. Yeah, I was moving to the States so I was not quite up to the changed in the freebsd. Actually I mean root floppy. I booted off the boot floppy installed root floppy then the system rebooted after cpioing root floppy on the newfsed root filesystem on the hard drive: and I was without kernel. before rebooting it told me _explicitly_ to boot off the hard drive as all previous releases I was trying to install did. The problem is that I'm now using aha2940 and can't thus try 2.0R (and ain't supposed to I guess: 2.0.5 should work fine: but it ain't: looks like I'm missing something...) AGL ok, here are the steps: 1) fdisking 2) disklabeling(e)diting & a)ssigning: a-/, b-swap e-/usr) 3) proceeding -> install reboots the system asking to remove any floppy and boot off the hard drive (no bin floppies are asked yet) looks like something misses my attention, some subtle change after 950[34]XXSNAP in the install method but I guess what is that... > > Yours > > Gary > > From owner-freebsd-install Fri Jul 14 09:17:37 1995 Return-Path: install-owner Received: (from majordom@localhost) by freefall.cdrom.com (8.6.10/8.6.6) id JAA16292 for install-outgoing; Fri, 14 Jul 1995 09:17:37 -0700 Received: from sheba.sequoiap.com (sequoiap.vip.best.com [205.149.161.44]) by freefall.cdrom.com (8.6.10/8.6.6) with SMTP id JAA16277 for ; Fri, 14 Jul 1995 09:17:33 -0700 Date: Fri, 14 Jul 1995 09:17:03 -700 (PDT) From: Anthony Graphics Subject: Re: problem installing 2.0.5-R: no kernel gets to the / :-( To: Michael Smith cc: freebsd-install@freebsd.org In-Reply-To: <199507140307.MAA15328@genesis.atrad.adelaide.edu.au> Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: install-owner@freebsd.org Precedence: bulk On Fri, 14 Jul 1995, Michael Smith wrote: > Please don't post questions to the hackers mailing list. > > Anthony Graphics stands accused of saying: > > > > I'm trying to install 2.0.5-R but after removing cpio floppy\ > > boot procedure can't complete: to kernel is available on the hard disk? > > ? shows stand etc bin, a couple of other dirs: but no kernel :-( > > This, I'm afraid, makes no sense at all. Yes, I mean root floppy ok, but how can I boot off the hard drive as the install procedure suggests? I tried to specify fd(0,a)/kernel and installing boot floppy into floppy drive but ended up in the same menutils as I seen after booting freebsd off the floppy.
