Crappy Windows encoders. I have a bunch of mp3s that play under xaudio but not mpg123. The mp3s I've encoded under various unix based encoders happily played under unix. But windows ones have all sorts of fun - some don't play at all, some have large skips (sound like 'smudges' in the music where it says "can't rewind stream by x bits!"..) but play perfect in xaudio/windows players. Which is all fine and good, except xaudio for some reason doesn't like my 2.2.7-REL laptop (plays sound at a fraction of the real speed).. Whether mpg123 is at fault from a 'standards' point of view, or the encoder is just crappy (more likely IMHO) and xaudio caters for it is something I don't have the answer for.
