I listen to the claims and then I go check it out for myself... My favorite OS is BeOS! But my FreeBSD 4.3 is stable-enough and fast enough for me... (Not only that, I'm beginning to understand it!) Oh, it'll get faster - I wouldn't use it without SMP - that's the nature of things... I use linux also... Suse 7.0{from 6.0,6.1,6.2}... But I'm afraid Linux is becoming more like MS Windows every week... Kinda of scary to witness the metamorphosis... To listen to the meda, RedHat all but invented the 2.4 kernel! :) Unbelieveable! I use MS Windows 98... Only because they have drivers for my hardware... Specifically DVD-RAM, Scanner, Radeon VE... Anyway that's my two cents... Happy computing! If you find something better than FreeBSD, SMP-wise, let me know... I'm only run dual-300s... but they're running! :) Dave Leimbach on 04/25/2001 08:44:30 AM Please respond to dleimbac@earthlink.net To: questions@freebsd.org cc: (bcc: Steven D. Smith/HSB/ISHSG/DIVADMIN/DOH) Subject: Misinformation I have run into a few people who made the following false claims about freeBSD. These people sounded like they knew what they were talking about when I first spoke with them. 1) Its based on Mach. 2) The SMP in FreeBSD is far superior to even Linux 2.4.x I am sure there were more. This type of "I don't know what I am talking about but it sounds good" attitude from whoever said it was very convincing. . This is obviously bad for people like myself who are interested in OS design and got lured in to the FreeBSD camp by false claims. Luckily I still find FreeBSD 4.2 faster and more stable than Linux 2.4.2. (note: I haven't run 4.3 yet) I have looked into SMP in FreeBSD and it seems all the real support is going into the 5 release. Some of the decisions in kernel design were just as bad as the old Linux kernel back in 2.0.x as far as SMP goes. We shouldn't lose heart though. Solaris, which is regarded as a fairly scalable platform, was in the same situation a few years back and are now doing much better in the SMP area. Well that's it from me. I will continue to use/enjoy FreeBSD. I just wish people didn't tell lies to try and get more people involved with it.
