Thanks for the replies. Before I responded to them, I wanted to double
check myself, and here's what I found:

I originally read mail.local(8) on a FreeBSD 2.2.6 workstation, which
states:

FILES
     /var/tmp/local.XXXXXX temporary files
     /var/mail/user user's mailbox directory

This morning before I replied to your emails, I read mail.local(8) on
the offending 2.2.5 server:

FILES
     /tmp/local.XXXXXX temporary files
     /var/mail/user user's mailbox directory

there it is.

Next time I'll make sure I read the man page on the machine with the
problem. :-)

Thanks so much for your help!

Chuck
