Would someone care to either MFC the missing bits or back this out? - 
stable builds have been broken for two days now.  If this had been  
current, there would have been tens, if not more, messages about how  
unacceptable that is; I find it *a lot* more unacceptable in -stable,  
especially as a compile test would have caught this before committing...
