Funny you mention that your wife's Desktop OS is FreeBSD.  Similarly I have
my 3 year old daughter on it at home.  She uses KDE and GNOME to run her
childeren's games and never has a problem.  I have to log her in of course
because she hasn't mastered typing yet ;-)
