Not sure what version of X you are running. There was no support for
these cards in the
version that shipped with FreeBSD 3.2 (my current flavour).

The latest release of XFree86 has support for these cards. As I type
it's building on my FreeBSD box. :-)
I had the same problems with Red Hat and 3.3.5 of XFree got past it so
I assume that FreeBSD & XFree will
provide the same relief.

So I'd suggest that you try the same or wait for a copy of FreeBSD 3.3
which, I assume, has the later version of XFree
incorporated. If not I'm sure someone will jump in and correct me.
