I just did a fresh install of Freebsd 4.2.  It went smoothly; configured X
using XFree86Setup.  I configured the server and used plain vanilla X for
client with no problems.

At least it looked like it was working.  Then I completed the install,
rebooted, and logged in as root.  When I type startx, I get:
