If it's a PS/2 mouse you need to set that in the kernel - check your kernel for the following line: device psm0 at isa? port "IO_KBD" conflicts tty irq 12 vector psmintr (all on one line) The generic kernel comes with this line, but with "disable" in it. If you still have "disable", remove that word then remake and install your kernel and reboot.
