Actually, I think I may have found it.  The new named *insists* that
certain files be located in /etc/namedb, even if named.conf tells it to
get files from somewhere else.  The long pause no longer happens, but it
now cannot look up remote names.  Is the "hint" file name no longer
flexible, i.e. does it have to be a specific name?
