I would go for the hardware; software RAID just ain't worth the hassle. :)

I use an ASUS board, the A7V333. It has an on-board RAID-controller, from
which you can boot easily; it supports RAID 0 and RAID 1, and is a high
quality motherboard altogether; and the whole thing will only set you back
around $120,--.
