By "free" I was following your desire for a "BSD-licensed" (or better) compiler. LCC isn't that. If it's "free enough" for you, then go for it. Whether it or some other alternative is "better" *for your application* is up to you to determine. One of the issues with an alternative compiler is that you'll likely need to keep GCC and associated tools around anyway, for ports, kernels, and updates.
