Color me stupefied, but vnconfig seems to use bizarre umasks to create files. I do not have any other plain partitions that I can use at this time, just this vinum stripe. I tried just swapon on the striped volume, get the same error. Am I hitting some limitation in the number of swap devices or something? Because "invalid argument" isn't much of a message.
