This is a common problem. 9 times out of 10, it can be fixed by
replacing your IDE cable with shielded 80 pin ATA 100 IDE cables.  

It's not in the Faq--it is mentioned in man ATA  (However, I didn't
know to look there, but was told by the writer of man ATA that I
should)  :)
