Not sure.. I will check.. but in the mean time I decided to nuke the
whole machine and make sure some leftover junk was not causing an
issue... so I reinstalled 8.. no packages/ports and am now starting
a buildworld on the 9.0 head of Sunday.

Once I get that built and up I will reinstall all gnome2 and make
sure /proc is mounted...

That will give me a clean slate ;-)
