Another poster has already mentioned one of the Samba books the man pages.
I will add the suggestion of looking into using SWAT.  This is a graphical 
web-based configuration tool for Samba which incorporates setting up your
smb.conf in quite a nice manner.  It is included as part of the Samba
distribution.  You may also like to look at the other graphical admin
tools that are listed on the Samba web site.
