enable use of env variables instead of hard coded paths

On Linux, the theme information will look in the hard coded home path and in
/usr/share. For BSD installs that use /usr/local/share, this patch is need=
ed.

If no env variables are available on the system, the program will still def=
ault
to the previous hard coded paths.

Attached is a patch I made with git from my local fork.
