As a general rule I move all fs/dirs where there's expected to be lots of read/write activity to either a usb3 stick, or one of those usb-powered spinning rust disks. Even though on the Pi, the interface is only usb2, for some reason using usb3-capable storage is more pain-free than something strictly usb2. I don't know why. I only get the problem you're describing with usb2 disks. So, on the usb3 key or disk I mount the following, before updating kernel world or building anything from ports: /ccache /var/log /usr/ports /usr/src /usr/obj /tmp /usr/home swap partition /var/tmp is a small mfs. -- J. tech-lists@zyxst.net
