How are you implementing PIO mode.  After searching the archives the only
method I saw mentioned was to put

/sbin/sysctl -w hw.atamodes=pio,pio,pio,pio

at the beginning of /etc/defaults/rc.conf or in /etc/rc.local.  This did
not work for me.
