Seems like a DNS problem to me.  One way to solve this is to write
manually a resolv.conf that contains the proper nameserver lines, i.e.

	nameserver 1.2.3.4

where 1.2.3.4 is your ISP's nameserver IP address.

I think that both ppp and pppd have an option to "enable dns", but I
haven't used it much lately.  I'm sure the relevant manpages are more up
to date on this one than my memory.
