Or is AHCI better? If you can you should set it to AHCI which is a true native SATA mode instead of IDE emulation. AHCI is a true SATA hardware interface that exposes a fully featured protocol stack (NCQ, hot-plug, staggered spin-up etc.). Without it, you revert back to classical IDE over a SATA phy which doesn't really slow down the physical connection but adds a lot of driver overhead, i.e. by treating it as an IDE device, the driver performs a lot of unnecessary I/O access such as having to select the drive even though its point-to-point ("serial"), etc. -aps -- "What lies behind us and what lies in front of us is of little concern to what lies within us." -Ralph Waldo Emerson
