I've got a FreeBSD native binary that I'm testing locally. (See my recent post to hackers about wchar support.) If it works out I'm going to see if I can make it available on the FreeBSD-java page. Most of these reports are closed stating that the problem can almost always be attributed to a problem in the user's code. This is utter bs! Hmm, I *just* compiled it yesterday on a 2.2.8 system by replacing 'wchar.h' with: #include and using the RedHat 5 - libc5 defines. CCREQUIREDFLAGS=-DGNU_LIBC5 -DUNIX -funsigned-char -c -DTYPE_bool -ansi -I. The GNU_LIBC5 sources bring in some w* definitions that are necessary, and the resulting executable appears to be working fine. (Although, it appears to run slower than the Linux version.) I haven't stress tested it completely on my (fairly complex) JFC applications, but it appears to work fine. However, I should note that the Linux jikes binary is still faster than the FreeBSD native binary I compiled. (In case you weren't aware, Jikes is a replacement for javac, and only javac. No VM, but the compiler is at least 10X faster than javac). Some things to note. Applets compiled with jikes don't always work the same as applets compiled with javac. Some people have reported that jikes compiled applets won't pass the byte-code verifier test in certain browsers, but this was with older versions of Jikes. Newer versions of jikes are supposed to have fixed it, but the reporters haven't updated to test this yet. (This from another mailing list I'm on.) So if nothing bad happens I will put it out on the net on the weekend @gonzalez. ftp://gonzalez.cyberus.ca/pub/Linux/java/ (Thanks the work of Neil Sanche I choosed ``gonzalez'' to be TYA's home site.) This release will be both: a Linux plus a FreeBSD release. Thanks the initial work of K.Ball and my further ``studies'' of FreeBSD OS. I used version 2.2.6 and jdk1.1.5 (February) I have added a primitive recognition of this JDK in the./configure script, so it should run well. (But tested only text mode stuff like ``javac'') Because 1.1.5 is outdated, I tried also 1.1.6, that works too. But this mysscript does not recognize autmaticly, because Steve Bourne's Linux port has the same release version. WHAT I NEED is mostly that someone of you experts will change the configure script for proper setting some defines like #define FREEBSD etc. > If its the later, I'd be happy to maintain the port. I use it (the Linux version of FreeBSD) for my own development for quite some months now and I never had any problem that javac would not also have reported. I just know my mistakes faster than with javac :-) For development, jikes really saves an awful lot of time that you would otherwise have to just sit back, relax and enjoy the waiting. -Gunther Gunther Schadow ----------------------------------- http://aurora.rg.iupui.edu Regenstrief Institute for Health Care 1001 W 10th Street RG5, Indianapolis IN 46202, Phone: (317) 630 7960 schadow@aurora.rg.iupui.edu ---------------------- #include To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Fri Dec 11 08:15:19 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id IAA23606 for freebsd-java-outgoing; Fri, 11 Dec 1998 08:15:19 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from multivac.fatburen.org (multivac.fatburen.org [62.20.128.15]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id IAA23600 for ; Fri, 11 Dec 1998 08:15:17 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from staffanu@multivac.fatburen.org) Received: (from staffanu@localhost) by multivac.fatburen.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id RAA05448; Fri, 11 Dec 1998 17:14:47 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from staffanu) To: Gunther Schadow Cc: archie@whistle.com, chuckr@mat.net, java@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: IBM Jikes (java source -> byte code compiler) released in open-source form References: <199812111537.KAA01493@aurora.rg.iupui.edu> Mime-Version: 1.0 (generated by tm-edit 7.106) Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII From: Staffan Ulfberg Date: 11 Dec 1998 17:14:43 +0100 In-Reply-To: Gunther Schadow's message of Fri, 11 Dec 1998 10:37:23 -0500 (EST) Message-ID: <87iufimz9o.fsf@multivac.fatburen.org> Lines: 24 X-Mailer: Gnus v5.5/Emacs 20.2 Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Gunther Schadow writes: > Jikes definitely can handle inner classes. I just > know my mistakes faster than with javac :-) I discovered a difference between these two compilers when I switched to using Jikes. I don't know Java well enough to know which one is doing the right thing, however. I imported java.util.* and java.awt.*, and used the class List which is present in both packages without specifying which one. Only one had the correct parameter types, however, so javac seems to have decided which one I wanted to use based on that. Jikes complained about it. Also, I've not got my servlets to work using Jikes. The compile ok, but somehow fail to load. Recompiling them with javac make 'em work again. So, there definitely are differences in the code they produce, and sometimes this seems to matter. Here is a sample class that it barfs on: import java.io.*; public class Foo { public static class FooBar extends DataInputStream { public FooBar() { super(new InputStream() { public int read() { return -1; } }); } } } Can someone try this with the Sun classes.zip in their CLASSPATH instead and tell me if it works? > ps.
