As soon as I turn on debugging on that interface it starts to work again. So this is obviously a timming issue. It happens only to one (heavy loaded) router (a Descend, I think), never to other (less heavy loaded, better ones like Cisco). I guess we'll have to add a configurable delay in the PPP state machine.
