Yes, but for all practical purposes there are only two manufactures
which happen to have an highly incestious relationship because there are
really only two chipsets on the market.

That's how a lot of them work.  They do use custom firmware.

People are working on it, at least under Linux.  This won't solve the
vmware problems though because AP firmware doesn't look much like
adaptor firmware.
