I use KDE and then set my keyboard layout to Spanish traditional. It=20 provides for the "con acento" such as =E1, "=F1", and etc. If I press the "= =20 key and then a letter, I get the equivalent of the umlaut key. Look for=20 a layout that specifies "dead keys".
