i just noticed that *sometimes* i get messages like these:

===> Applying distribution patches for vim-6.0.8
Can't backup src/version.c, output is in /tmp/patchofWSNj1: No such file or directory
Can't backup src/version.c, output is in /tmp/patchoqVakpl: No such file or directory
Can't backup src/version.c, output is in /tmp/patchoVkPIbd: No such file or directory
===> Applying FreeBSD patches for vim-6.0.8

or:

===> Applying distribution patches for vim-6.0.8
Can't backup src/version.c, output is in /tmp/patchofB4wQJ: No such file or directory
File to patch:

and even more interesting:

===> Applying distribution patches for vim-6.0.8
===> Applying FreeBSD patches for vim-6.0.8
===>  Configuring for vim-6.0.8
===>  Building for vim-6.0.8
make: don't know how to make distclean. Stop
*** Error code 2

(why is it trying to "make distclean" !?)
the command is always "make -DWITH_MOTIF"
