And a point that could cause some confusion, you do /NOT/ need to
register a domain to run a DNS server. Anyone can run named on their
machine. Anyone can provide local DNS for their own net without
registering a domain. It's only if you want to pass information to the
outside world that you need to register a domain.

The chapter in 'The Complete FreeBSD' about Domain Name Service is a
very good primer and can help you decide.
